Encountering the Father in Worship

How powerful is the word that Jesus spoke concerning the Father? He said the Father is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. This He spoke to the woman at Jacob’s well as He revealed His glory to her. The Father seeks such worshippers. Of all the things that God could be seeking out, He is looking for true worshippers.

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

John 4:23-24

Having a revelation of God as your Father is such a significant aspect of your faith. I can remember when I was a few years into my walk with God. As I was lying in an upper room, on the floor, I began to realize that I had experienced the reality of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but not God as my Father. At that moment, I expressed this realization to Him, and then, “whoosh!” – He entered the room where I was, in a very distinct and different way than I had previously experienced.

It was as if He was waiting for me to see the need for Him to come in this way. It was the fullness of His love that poured into my heart as I continued to lay there, weeping in His presence. It was enlightening, conforming, and refreshing all at the same time. There is a blanket of peace that comes with the Father’s love. A powerful peace and rest envelop your heart as you experience His embrace.

Recently, a friend of mine told me that he understood the overflow of joy. He is someone who has great zeal for the Lord and is ready to take the world for Jesus! But one day, he came up to me to say that although he had this great joy, he was lacking an experience of the peace of God in his heart. He knew I had it, but he didn’t have it when tests would come. I really didn’t think much of it and just encouraged him to receive God’s peace.

About a week later, I was sharing a message where the last point was about the Father’s love. It was a point that I just threw in at the very end of what I was sharing. The Lord landed on that word, and I asked if there was anyone in the room who needed to experience the Father’s love. A few people stood up, and he was one of them. Needless to say, God came and poured a huge deposit of His love within his heart. What I came to find out is that his father had abandoned him as a child. Because of this, an “orphan mindset” had come into his life. But that day, the Father totally set him free from that, and he received the Holy Spirit in the form of the “spirit of adoption.”

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

Romans 8:15

What does this have to do with worshiping in spirit and in truth? Everything! It is the truth that we are adopted into the family of God with the most loving heavenly Father. The spirit of revelation opens our eyes to the truth. For every truth revealed, there is a greater capacity to worship the Father in that revelation. When we see Him for who He is, then we are more and more worshiping from the heart, rather than the head – just repeating words. God unveils, pulls open the blinds, and opens the curtain for us to see Him as He is. This causes us to enter into worship from the depths of our hearts. The Father seeks those who worship Him in spirit and in truth.

The Father was a stumbling block to the religious leaders. When Jesus began to talk about His Father, it went right over their heads because all they knew were laws and legalism. They became jealous of Him because they had no living relationship with God – such is the poison of religion. All they knew was how to keep a list. God wants to pour His Spirit into our hearts so that we may cry out, “Abba, Father.”

Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5

Have you encountered the Father? Ask Him to reveal His love to you today. In Christ, you have been accepted and adopted into His family, where His peace flows like a river. Worship Him with this revelation of the Father, knowing His good nature and seeing Him as He is.
